MARTHA HIGH

  martha high

Martha High was JAMES BROWN's long term vocalist for over 30 years and sang on most of his albums throughout the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Indeed, this Platinum Blond Funky Diva appeared on many masterpieces such as PAYBACK, BODYHEAT, DOIN' IT TO DEATH and on the unforgettable duet with James Brown, SUMMERTIME.

She began her career in Washington, D.C. as part of The Four Jewels and in 1964 the group joined the James Brown Revue. The Jewels disbanded in the late sixties but Martha High and stayed with James Brown as his personal vocalist for 38 years. A length unrivalled by anyone.
Over those years she shared the stage with greats like LITTLE RICHARD, JERRY LEE LEWIS, THE TEMPATAIONS, Original Soul Sister ARETHA FRANKLIN, GEORGE CLINTON, B.B. KING, MARY J BLIGE, STEVIE WONDER and THE POLICE.

In 1979, with James Brown's support, she recorded and released a self-titled solo album for Salsoul Records.
Martha finally left James Brown in 1995 to tour with the legendary MACEO PARKER and pursue her solo career. She also went on to record 'It's Hustle Time (I'm Not Braggin')' along with a live album entitled 'Martha High live at Quai Du Blues'.

She continues to perform around the world, on solo tours as well as with Maceo Parker, The Pee Wee Ellis Assembly and now ‘Still Black, Still Proud – The African Tribute to James Brown”. Catch her if you can!
